Attic Insulation Eugene, OR
The attic is where most Eugene houses lose the most, and in this climate the fault is usually air moving through the ceiling rather than heat passing through the insulation.
Where a Willamette Valley Attic Loses Its Money
The climate here is mild and wet rather than extreme, which misleads people into thinking the attic matters less. It matters differently. The heating season is long, so small continuous losses accumulate for months, and the dominant path is air moving through gaps at the ceiling plane: around recessed lights, at top plates, through plumbing penetrations and an unsealed attic hatch. Material lying above those gaps slows heat transfer while leaving the air exchange exactly as it was.
Moisture Is the Other Half of the Problem
Warm indoor air carries moisture, and where it escapes into a cold attic that moisture condenses on the underside of the roof sheathing. Across a long damp Oregon winter that becomes a building-condition issue as much as a comfort one. An attic can hold the full rated depth of insulation and still have a moisture problem, because depth was never what controlled it. Sealing the ceiling plane and getting the ventilation right is what addresses it.
Roof Deck or Attic Floor
Insulating the attic floor keeps the attic outside the envelope and suits a simple, well-vented, empty attic. Insulating at the roof deck brings the whole attic volume inside the envelope, which is the stronger answer where ductwork or an air handler sits up there, where the attic is partly finished, or where it is used for storage. Equipment running through unconditioned attic space works against the house every minute it operates.
What the Finished Work Should Show
Depth measured and photographed where loose material went in. Consistent thickness across a roof deck where foam was applied, including the awkward runs at the eaves where coverage slips most easily. The attic hatch sealed and insulated, since it is a hole in the ceiling that routinely gets forgotten. Penetrations sealed before anything was laid over them.
Questions
Common questions
Is spray foam or blown-in better for a Eugene attic?
On an open, empty attic both work and blown-in uses less material. Foam at the roof deck also air seals, which matters a great deal if there is ductwork up there.
Do you remove the old insulation first?
Only where it is damp, settled well below its depth, or contaminated. If what is there is dry and sound, topping up is often the better value and we will say so.
Will attic work help with the damp smell?
Often yes, because that smell usually comes from moisture reaching cold roof sheathing through an unsealed ceiling.
